The New York Times Photo ArchivesYesterday, we introduced you to a social media opportunity to promote the centennial of the passing of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Maryland Women’s Fight for the Vote — A Story Map

This story map highlights the statewide activism of Maryland’s suffragists and the places where they demonstrated, lobbied, and were jailed in pursuit of the right to vote.

The project’s research produced new insight into the manifold activities of Maryland’s suffragists, and identified scores of places associated with the movement around the state. It will provide the basis for a Multiple Property Documentation Form, to be prepared by MHT, which will enable nomination of Maryland Women’s Suffrage properties to the National Register of Historic Places as they are identified and documented. Additionally, MHT’s newly-reinstated Non-Capital Grant fund will support a statewide effort to continue researching women’s suffrage sites and to draw public attention to the story of Maryland’s suffragists.

Preservation Maryland

The Ballot & Beyond

Leading up to the 100th Anniversary of the Passage of the 19th Amendment, Preservation Maryland will focus on researching and documenting the tangible connections to the extraordinary fight to gain women the right to vote. This project will update the existing historic record with new and inclusive information about Maryland’s suffragists.

Preservation Maryland is using 21th-century tools and an inclusive historic approach to elevate the complex history of Maryland’s suffragists and their lasting legacy on equality in the United States. The Ballot & Beyond multi-media public history project is powered by Preservation Maryland’s Six-to-Fix program with additional support by Gallagher, Evelius & Jones. Biographical sketches and historic images of over two dozen remarkable Maryland women are now streaming for free on Ballot & Beyond. You’ll learn about many Maryland women of note including suffragists, legislators, judges, philanthropists, and more.

19th Amendment Commission

Authorized in July 2013, the Commission on the Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution seeks to: develop a plan for commemorating the events that occurred in Maryland connected to women’s suffrage and the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution; assemble an inventory of sites in Maryland that are significant to the suffrage movement; develop a strategy to encourage tourism related to the commemoration; and foster collaboration between federal, state, county and municipal organizations with regard to commemorative programming.

The Commission seeks research and volunteer assistance related to all aspects of its mission. The next Public Commission Meeting is Tuesday, September 22 at 10:00 am. Follow the link above for further information.
