USNA Commissioning Week in Annapolis

USNA Commissioning Week in Annapolis

The United States Naval Academy has long played an important role in the history and heritage of Annapolis. May particularly brings a week of tradition and ceremony as USNA celebrates its graduating class.

Commissioning Week involves a full week of celebratory events beginning Friday, May 19, 2017 and culminating with graduation day at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday, May 26, 2017. Even if you don’t know anyone graduating from the Academy this year, Commissioning Week offers a host of events, some available to the public, that provide a taste of the history and tradition of the United States Naval Academy, along with an airshow put on by the famed Blue Angels.

COMMISSIONING WEEK EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

BLUE ANGELS

Each of the week’s events has something special to offer guests, but there is one that is not to be missed when visiting Annapolis during Commissioning Week: The Blue Angels. Crowds gather on the banks of the Severn River on the USNA campus to witness the amazing aerial performance of the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squad. The Blue Angels’ flyovers can be seen:

  • Tuesday, over the Severn River at 11:00 am – 1:00 pm for circle and arrival, and at 1:45 pm – 4:00 pm for a flight rehearsal.
  • Wednesday, over the Severn River at 1:45 pm – 4:00 pm for a flight demonstration.
  • Friday, above the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the time-honored graduation flyover.

Due to the popularity of the Blue Angels, we expect to have an increase in visitors and traffic in Annapolis, so plan your day accordingly so you can enjoy all that Annapolis and the Blue Angels have to offer.

TOUR THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

Be sure to bring two forms of valid ID (picture ID, passport, credit card, student ID) if you plan on visiting the USNA, as you will not be permitted on the grounds without proper ID. If you’re going through Gate 1 of the USNA, expect to have your bags checked and be asked to walk through a metal detector for security purposes. Unauthorized vehicles are not permitted on the grounds. Also, several USNA concerts, drill demonstrations, ceremonies and parades that take place at the academy during the week are open to the public.
