Tools for International Underground Railroad Month – DEADLINE TOMORROW!
The below information was shared with us by the Maryland Department of Commerce’s Office of Tourism (OTD), and we wanted to be sure to make our partners aware of these great tools and resources as we all prepare to celebrate International Underground Railroad Month.
This September, join Maryland’s commemoration of International Underground Railroad Month and inspire visitors to travel to learn about the Underground Railroad. For all the information and details about how you can participate in International Underground Railroad Month, please visit the Department of Commerce Office of Tourism website.
Current visitor research indicates that travelers are most comfortable on road trips with those living in their household. Maryland has great statewide tourism products about the Underground Railroad to assist travelers with planning their trips and to provide information along the way. You are welcome to utilize and share any of these products (available both online and in-print) with visitors:
- Maryland’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Visitor Guide
- Maryland’s Network to Freedom
- Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Scenic Byway Map, Guide, and Audio Guide
- Frederick Douglass Driving Tour Map
The Office of Tourism has developed a Social Media Guide with all the information you need to maximize your social messaging during International Underground Railroad Month. Included are suggested hashtags, best practices, visual assets to use (including videos and photos), as well as sample Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts.
If you are welcoming in-person visitation to your site, it is strongly recommend that you use updated photos of guests wearing masks and adhering to physical distancing guidelines. If you use pre-COVID imagery consider using a call-to-action to follow current guidelines.
If you have any questions about the guide or how to maximize your exposure on social media, contact Ana Hall-Defoor, OTD Social Media and Digital Products Coordinator, at [email protected].
The Office of Tourism team is ready to help market you, the destination, and your International Underground Railroad Month tourism products and programs. Tell them what you are planning—on-site and virtual—for International Underground Railroad Month by TOMORROW, Friday, August 21 by filling out the 2020 International Underground Railroad Month Participation form.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Heather Ersts, OTD Partnership and Outreach Manager, at [email protected].
