Museums Now Open for Visitors

Open sign in store windowWe’re excited to announce some new openings among our heritage sites.

The US Naval Academy is open to the public, which means if you’re in Annapolis, you can now visit the Naval Academy Museum as well. The Museum offers two floors of exhibits about the history of seapower, the development of the U.S. Navy, and the role of the U.S. Naval Academy in producing officers capable of leading America’s sailors and marines. Check out their website for hours of operation.

Or head down to southern Anne Arundel County to visit the Captain Avery Museum, reopening this weekend. Located in Shady Side, this museum engages both the local community and visitors with activities that explore evolving connections to the Chesapeake Bay through the prism of a historic home and waterfront property. Their grand reopening event is taking place this Sunday, July 18, from 12:00-4:00 pm and will feature an art reception celebrating Shady Side artist, Norman Gross.

When you are in South County, you can also stop at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, which is now open for hiking, biking and paddling Monday through Saturday. SERC’s 2,650-acre campus spans forests, wetlands, marshes and 15 miles of protected shoreline. The site serves as a natural laboratory for long-term and cutting-edge ecological research. Visit their website for updated maps and hours as well as information on their new safety measures.

In North County, the National Electronics Museum has reopened. Hands-on exhibits support the Museum’s mission to use our region’s electronic and engineering heritage to educate and inspire students and the general public. Visit their website for hours and details.

Two of our heritage area’s beloved historic houses have reopened — the William Paca House in Annapolis and the William Brown House at Historic London Town and Gardens in Edgewater.

There’s always more to explore! Learn about other sites in the Four Rivers Heritage Area that are currently open to the public, or still available for virtual experiences, by visiting our Attractions Page.

Have a great weekend!
