We know it’s October when Annapolis starts its ghost tours! Prepare to be spooked! You can stay busy this Saturday with Odenton Heritage Society’s Annual Open House, the Arts in the Park event at the Chesapeake Arts Center, or combine art and wellness at Hammond-Harwood House’s Stretch and Sketch. This week we have something for everyone!

Events This Week

Mr. Paca’s Garden Storytime: “A Rainbow of Friends”

Join Historic Annapolis on select Tuesday mornings for storytime and fun activities in the William Paca Garden, a secret treasure in the Historic District of Annapolis. Each program is designed for little ones (4-7 years) with a book reading, song, craft/art project, and free time in the garden.

It is important to celebrate our differences because it’s what makes us unique! celebrate the lessons of diversity, differentiation, inclusion, and acceptance. Cost to participate is $10 per Child and $5 per Adult for General Admission; $8 per Child and Free for Adults for HA Members and Volunteers; $5 per Child and Free for Adults for Family Circle Members.

Historic Hauntings Ghost Tours

  • Date: Friday, October 1 & Saturday, October 2
  • Time: 8 pm (check website for additional times)
  • Location: Meet at the Market House Park, 25 Market Space
  • Host Organization: Historic Annapolis, in partnership with Watermark

On this walking tour, you will be led by a spirited guide through the dark alleys, spooky side streets, and lesser-known haunted sites of the old and creaky town of Annapolis. Hear of real diary entries and newspaper articles of what frightened early 18th century folks and how they utilized the moon and candles. Listen to tales of spirits that linger in the mist, and explore one of Annapolis’ best-known cemeteries. Special Historic Hauntings takes you back to a time of superstition and legend. And who knows, after a trip inside Hogshead, your own story may be added to the history of Annapolis.

Cost to participate is Adults, $25; Children (11 and under), $14. Historic Hauntings is presented in partnership with Watermark.

Odenton Heritage Society Open House – Odenton Day 2021

  • Host Organization: Odenton Heritage Society

Come on out for a day of fun on Odenton Day 2021! The Odenton Heritage Society will be represented at both the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company Firehouse and the Odenton Heritage Society’s museum on Sunday. There will be free guided tours by shuttle bus leaving from the OVFC Firehouse (located at 1425 Annapolis Road), to the OHS Historical Center, at 1367 Odenton Road and back. The tour will offer the opportunity to learn why Odenton is called “The Town a Railroad Built,” pass through Odenton’s historic area, view two sites on the National Register of Historic Places, and pay a visit to our historical museum.

Odenton Day is a joint effort by the Odenton Heritage Society, Inc., Odenton Volunteer Fire Company, the Greater Odenton Improvement Association and the Central Maryland Chamber of Commerce. This event is free to attend.

Arts in the Park

  • Time: 10:00 am-3:00 pm
  • Location: Chesapeake Arts Center, 194 Hammonds Ln, Brooklyn Park

Join Chesapeake Arts Center (CAC) for their 7th annual free outdoor Arts in the Park festival for all ages. This free event will feature live music, hands-on art activities for kids and adults, chalk drawing, face painting, local art and community vendors, food trucks, and more!  Arts in the Park is CAC’s kick off event for their 20th Anniversary year as they “celebrate 20 years of building community through creativity” in our region. Make sure to bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the live entertainment.

Chesapeake Arts Center thanks the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County and Four Rivers Heritage Area for support of Arts in the Park. This event is free to attend but please register for your tickets in advance.

Stretch and Sketch

  • Date: Saturday, October 2
  • Time: 10:30 am-12:00 pm
  • Location: Hammond-Harwood House, 19 Maryland Ave, Annapolis
  • Host Organization: Hammond-Harwood House

In the second program of the Art and Wellness Series, Stretch and Sketch at Hammond-Harwood House, you will: view and discuss a painting of George Washington by Rembrandt Peale; choose a painting in the museum’s first floor and sketch while discussing drawing techniques (materials provided); and do a stretching session in the garden with breathing techniques to help promote good posture and relieve stress.

The Winifred Gordon Memorial Art and Wellness Series is free thanks to the Winifred Gordon Foundation. These programs connect to the art collection to improve participant’s physical health and mental well-being. Reservations are required as space is limited.
