Smithsonian Virtual Lecture – Collecting American Elections

There is no bigger moment in the life of the American democracy than when voters head to the polls to exercise their rights as citizens to appoint a new leader. For curators at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, there is no clearer mandate than the presidential elections every four years to collect and document, to record and preserve the objects that capture the times.

Smithsonian Affiliations and the National Museum of American History present a roundtable discussion of scholars discussing the hard choices and years of experience that they bring to collecting objects and documents from presidential campaigns for the nation’s collection. Lisa Kathleen Graddy, Jon Grinspan, and Claire Jerry from the Division of Political and Military History will share their favorite campaign artifacts from the Smithsonian’s collection, and will bring a diverse perspective to how Americans elect leaders and what messages the objects of campaigns convey about their times. Join a moderated conversation allowing audience members to ask questions and contribute their thoughts. This is a free lecture offered in partnership with the Smithsonian Affiliations program. Historic Annapolis is a one of only 6 museums in Maryland to be recognized as a Smithsonian Affiliate.

Online Watershed Learning (OWL) Premiere: Fish Adaptations

It’s Rocktober and the rockfish are living it up in the Chesapeake Bay! Did you know they are always dressed for a good swim party? Their stripes and pointy fins are fashion with a purpose. A purpose with a distinct connection to surviving and thriving in our local waterways.

Join CBF’s Education department for an engaging CBF OWL program to explore fish adaptations in the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem—the good, the bad, and the ugly! See how different fish dress themselves up according to where they live, who they eat, and who preys upon them.  Learn how to make observations about the placement, size, and shape of fish fins, eyes, and mouth and uncover the reasons behind their scale coloration and pattern. By the end of this webinar, attendees will not only know why rockfish fins are so sharp but will also learn more about the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. This event is free to attend.

Webinar: Strategic Alliances, Corporate Integrations and Mergers for Nonprofits

Year in and year out, nonprofits face the challenge of maximizing community impact while living with the uncertainty that comes with changing interests of funders and reductions of federal appropriations. Both ends of the spectrum give boards reason to pause and ask, will merging or integrating with another nonprofit strengthen our mission and increase our ability to continue to serve the community with excellence?

In this webinar, Maryland Nonprofits walks nonprofit organizations considering integration thorough exploration and evaluation of the strengths (and weaknesses) of all potential partners. This session will go into depth regarding the steps that organizational leadership should take to minimize risk and maximize benefit as it pertains to integrating services with another nonprofit organization.The webinar is $20 to attend.

Virtual Lecture – Rolling Down the River: Jacques Marquette, Louis Jolliet, and the Fate of the French New World

In 1673, France and England were locked in a power struggle over the future of North America. In this virtual presentation, Laura Chmielewski explores the dynamics of French and English colonization at a time when the continent’s future was in transition. Hear the tale of the brief, yet epic, adventure of explorers Marquette and Jolliet – that nearly changed the course of a continent.

Registration is required. Cost to participate is $15 per household for General Admission or $10 per household for HA Members and Volunteers.

Pumpkins on the Avenue

Hammond-Harwood House cannot host the traditional Pumpkin Walk this year. Instead, celebrate Halloween by bringing a decorated pumpkin and adding it to the Pumpkin Patch on the front lawn between 12 p.m to 4 p.m on Friday, October 30 2020.

Pick up a pre-packed goodie bag, enjoy a scavenger hunt in the front lawn, take photos and post on social media. Watch storyteller Andrea Lovett for a frighteningly tame story and a few belly laughs in the online video telling of the Ghost With The One black eye by visiting this page or the Hammond-Harwood House social media. The event is free to attend.
