50th Anniversary Lecture Series – The Anne Arundel County Almshouse: Voices From the Lunacy Commission – SOLD OUT

Join London Town in celebrating our 50th anniversary with lectures highlighting our past and future. The heart of London Town’s historic area is the c.1760 William Brown House, a National Historic Landmark. Originally, the William Brown House began as an upscale tavern. After London Town’s heyday in the colonial era, it served as Anne Arundel County’s Almshouse from the mid-1820’s until 1965. The Almshouse was intended to house people who were poor, elderly, or mentally ill, but it was often an unpleasant place, even having been described as an “Abode of Misery.” Historian Lisa Robbins will give a glimpse into this part of London Town’s history. Robbins was the previous Education Programs Administrator at London Town.

Lunch and Learn: Maryland’s Artistic Property Highlights Recent Acquisitions

The state of Maryland is fortunate to have one of the most historic collections of state-owned art in the nation.  The collection includes paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and works on paper dating from the thirteenth century to the present and is rich in portraiture of Maryland governors, legislators, and first ladies. Many of these works of art are displayed in the Maryland State House, Government House, and other legislative buildings throughout the Annapolis complex. Recent acquisitions help expand the breadth of the collection in terms of date range and diversity, as well as historic treasures received as gifts. Catherine Rogers Arthur, Senior Curator Director of Artistic Property, will present a lecture about Maryland’s artistic property, recent acquisitions, and lead viewers on a virtual tour of Maryland’s Treasures of State.

This event is presented by The Maryland State Archives in collaboration with The Enoch Pratt Free Library and The Maryland Four Centuries Project. It is free to attend. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

John Shaw Walking Tour

This tour explores the fascinating life of acclaimed 18th century Scottish born cabinet maker John Shaw. The tour visits his workshop, church, and the homes of his clients. The tour meets at the Old Treasury Building in State Circle.
