Virtual Lecture – The Dark Alchemy of the Three-Fifths Clause

Join University of Maryland historian Richard Bell for a deep dive into the darkest corners of the 1787 federal Constitution. The preamble of the United States Constitution announces its purpose to secure “the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,” an important acknowledgement that liberty is the goal and right of all citizens. Yet, most constitutional scholars regard the 1787 Constitution as being vigorously pro-slavery, something that becomes apparent when we take a long hard look at its infamous Three-Fifths Clause. Far more insidious than is commonly understood, the Three-Fifths Clause wove slaveholder power into the fabric of each of all three branches of government—executive, legislative, and judicial—shaping every aspect of federal policy regarding slavery for decades to come.

Registration is required. Cost to participate is $15 per household for General Admission or $10 per household for HA Members and Volunteers.

It’s well known that women in 17th-century Europe were severely hindered in the any endeavor that overstepped the constraints of traditional feminine modesty and subservience. What is less well known is that a substantial number of intrepid women established themselves at the highest levels of almost every field, including the arts, politics, and business. Thanks to various combinations of exceptional talent, hard work, and special circumstances they managed to sidestep social constraints, and were widely acclaimed for doing so. Both Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi were acknowledged among the leading musicians of their respective generations.

Soprano Elissa Edwards and lutenist Richard Kolb present delightful songs on the lighter side by Strozzi and Caccini, framed with lute and theorbo solos by their contemporaries Michelangelo Galilei and Alessandro Piccinini. Cost at attend is $50. To make a reservation call: 410-263-4683 x10.
