Virtual Lecture – Planting an Empire

  • Date: TODAY, Tuesday, January 19
  • Time: 7:00 pm
  • Location: Online
  • Host Organization: Historic Annapolis

Planting an Empire is the only modern, comprehensive history of the Chesapeake colonies, but writing it wasn’t a simple task. While two colonies shared a geographic region, they differed in a number of fundamental ways, yet together they formed a prosperous and politically important region in British North America. Trying to balance two dissimilar narratives proved to be a challenge. A cautionary tale for would-be authors! The speaker is Dr. Jean Russo, who also serves as a Four Rivers Board member, and her book, Planting an Empire: The Early Chesapeake in British North America, a history of the colonial Chesapeake region, was written with her daughter, also an historian, and published by Johns Hopkins University Press (2012).

Registration is required. Cost to participate is $15 per household for General Admission or $10 per household for HA Members and Volunteers.
