MCHC Core Conversations: Community with Porchia Moore, PhD, and Nina Simon

How can history museums be relevant, responsive, and useful for many audiences in today’s disconnected and fast-paced world? Dr. Porchia Moore, Museum Critical Race Theorist, and Nina Simon, designer, instigator, and advocate for community-driven institutions, join Katie Caljean, MCHC’s Vice President of Education & Strategic Engagement in a conversation about “community.” This virtual program is free and open to all audiences. Registration is required. After registering for the program, attendees will receive an automated confirmation email with connection instructions.

Virtual Lecture – The Reverse Underground Railroad: Stolen, Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home

Guest speaker Richard Bell discusses his research and story behind his new book, Stolen, which covers the grim story of human trafficking and slave traders who ”stole” away thousands of legally free African Americans from their families in order to fuel slavery’s rapid expansion in the decades before the Civil War. His newest book tells of the odyssey of five free black boys kidnapped from Philadelphia in 1825 who were coffled to Mississippi for sale as slaves, only to escape, return and lead a manhunt to bring their former captors to justice.

Registration is required. Cost to attend is $15 per household for General Admission or $10 per household for HA Members and Volunteers.

BDM Annual Kwanzaa Celebration

Celebrate the seven principles of Kwanzaa through musical performances, games, crafts, and more! The program will include: Spoken Word Performance; Zawadi (Gift Making) Session; Live Music; Discussion on the Importance of Community and Intergenerational Engagement; Virtual Lighting Ceremony; and a “Buy Black” Marketplace. Register in advance. This event is free to attend.

Dining with the Loockermans by Candlelight

Step back in time with Curator Rachel Lovett and Food Historian Joyce White to learn about the cooking and dining traditions of the 19th century residents of Hammond-Harwood House, both free and enslaved. This one-hour, on-site special tour will focus on the kitchen, breakfast room, and dining room. In addition, each participant will receive a small box of historic treats to enrich the learning experience.

The Hammond-Harwood House will be decorated for the month of December. Reservations are required. To reserve call 410-263-4683 ext. 10 or email [email protected]. Price is $20 for General Admission or $15 for Members.
