Virtual Lecture – FDR and the Sea

One of FDR’s greatest passions was his enormous naval and maritime collection. Begun during his youth and patiently developed over decades, this rich collection—considered one of nation’s finest—reflects the President’s deep, lifelong love of the sea. An expert sailor, Roosevelt was America’s greatest seafaring president. Whether piloting a sailboat along the New England coast, racing his ice yacht on the Hudson River, fishing aboard pleasure craft, or crossing oceans on naval vessels, he relished time on the water.

This lecture, presented by Herman Eberhardt, Supervisory Museum Curator at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, will explore Franklin Roosevelt’s engagement with the sea and reveal treasures from his naval and maritime collection that provide insights into this vital aspect of his life. FDR’s special relationship with the U.S. Navy will also be highlighted, including his affection for the U.S. Naval Academy (which he had once hoped to attend).

Registration is required. The event is free to attend with a suggested donation of $10.

Virtual Tour – Lens & Brush: Works by American Illustrator Frank E. Schoonover

Take an online tour of the “Lens & Brush: Works by American Illustrator Frank E. Schoonover” exhibition followed by discussion of Howard Pyle by Henry Pitz, led by illustrator Rob Wood. Contact the gallery for book purchase. This event is free. Registration is required to participate in the following Book Club.

2021 Statewide Cemetery Conference and Annual Meeting

Join this year’s virtual CPMBS Statewide Cemetery Conference and Annual Meeting. The program will include: “Cemeteries in Cecil and Harford Counties” Presentation by Mike Dixon, historian and author; Debut of the first three Coalition preservation videos; What to do When you Discover a Cemetery; Researching your Maryland Cemetery’s History; Assessing Cemetery Conditions and Needs; an Open Forum: Tell your cemetery story, ask questions, network with colleagues, present issues, group discussion; the Annual Meeting, including brief business items and election; and a Presentation of 2021 Periwinkle Awards.

Registration is required. Registration fees are waived but donations would be appreciated.

Colonial Mocktails: Syllabub & Raspberry Shrub

From punches to bounces, syllabubs to juleps, colonists imbibed a wide variety of beverages. At Colonial Mocktails – the non-alcoholic version of our popular “Colonial Cocktails” program – you’ll get to make and enjoy two historical drinks and learn about colonial tavern culture. In this session, you’ll explore syllabub, a frothy cream dream with sparkling cider, and we’ll also try our hands at raspberry shrub, a sweet and tangy drink that’s perfect as the days get warmer.​

 Pre-registration is required.​ Cost to attend is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Participants must be 18+. Limited seats are available.
