The story of the Loockerman’s begins in October 1803 when Frances Townley Chase, a woman from an affluent Annapolis family marries the dashing Richard Loockerman of the Eastern Shore, a young man of great promise and inherited fortune. Noted as some of Robert Field’s best work the Loockerman’s miniatures were also painted upon their union. Field depicts an attractive couple filled with optimism for their future life together. Undenounced to Frances during their courtship, Richard’s vices soon became apparent including drinking and gambling.

The couple immediately began spending time on Richard’s inherited plantation in Caroline County much the chagrin of Frances’ father, the venerable Judge Jeremiah Townley Chase, once Mayor of Annapolis. In 1811 Judge Chase bought the Hammond estate next door to his home for Frances and Richard, which included an over ten thousand square foot structure and four acres of land. Instead of deeding the property to Richard, Judge Chase kept the property in his name in order to avoid Richard gambling it away. The Loockerman’s rollercoaster of a marriage produced ten children and came to a crashing halt in November of 1834 when Richard’s destructive ways proved fatal.
