Virtual Lecture – Finding the Maryland 400: Maryland’s First Heroes

April 6, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Owen Lourie chronicles the story of the Maryland 400, the soldiers from Maryland who saved George Washington’s army at the Battle of Brooklyn in August 1776. This talk describes their actions, including their famous last stand against the British. It also follows the lives of some of the soldiers after the war.

These soldiers were enlisted and trained in Annapolis, and included Sgt. William Sands, a native of the city. Sands’s letters home, written just before the battle, are featured here.
