Virtual Event: The Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary: The Ghost Fleet and Beyond

  • Our Nation’s newest National Marine Sanctuary, which encompasses more than 100 vessels constructed by the civilian U.S. Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corp. during WWI.
  • Discuss the importance of the area to the First Nation’s peoples, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, WWI and WWII, and the Great Depression. Review history of Mallows Bay commercial fishing through the centuries.
  • Uncover the many reasons to visit this peaceful enclave just 30 miles south of the nation’s capital, including excellent fishing and birdwatching.

Presenter: Dr. Susan Langley | Maryland State Underwater Archaeologist 

Susan Langley lectures internationally on a broad range of subjects including maritime archaeology, textile technology, piracy, and the archaeology and present practices of bees and beekeeping around the world.  Although her “day-job” is Maryland’s State Underwater Archaeologist directing the Maryland Maritime Archaeology Program for more than 26 years, she was also the beekeeper for a hive at Government House for almost 10 years.  Dr. Langley is an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities, where she teaches underwater archaeology and the history and anthropology of piracy.  She also taught maritime archaeology in Thailand for several years for the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO, part of UNESCO).  She is a Master SCUBA diver instructor, judges Maryland’s History Day competition, and lectures and leads trips for Zegrahm Expeditions.

Lectures will be held virtually. Lectures are $10; FREE for AMM Members First Mate and above ($100).
