Brothers in Arms: The Revolutionary Service of James and Edmund Brice

Two hundred fifty years ago, James Brice began building his Annapolis mansion, which still dominates the intersection of East and Prince George Streets. During the Revolutionary War, he served as Captain of the city militia and Lieutenant of the county militia, positions that earned him the honorary title “Colonel.” But James wasn’t the only Colonel in the Brice family; his younger brother, Edmund, a professionally-trained artist, was named a Lieutenant Colonel by Congress at the request of the Marquis de Lafayette. Senior Historian Glenn E. Campbell explores the fascinating life stories and revolutionary experiences of two brothers who joined the fight for American independence. This presentation is part of the annual Maryland History Lecture Series sponsored by the Friends of St. John’s College and the Anne Arundel County Trust for Preservation.
