Maryland Emancipation DayNovember 1 is Maryland Emancipation Day.

According to the 2013 Proclamation signed by Governor Martin O’Malley, this day commemorates the date of November 1, 1864, when Maryland adopted a new constitution that abolished slavery.

Celebrate Maryland Emancipation Day in the Four Rivers Heritage Area with a wreath laying at the graveside of Smith Price, a freed slave who became prominent in the history of Annapolis, donating the land for the city’s first African-American church where Asbury United Methodist Church stands today.

The event will take place on Sunday, November 1 beginning at 12:00 pm. Join the walk from Asbury United Methodist Church (87 West Street, Annapolis) to St. Anne’s Cemetery (199 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis). All are welcome to be part of this moving occasion!
