Activities to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. This Weekend

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.This upcoming three-day weekend honors Martin Luther King Jr. and his role as a prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. Join some of our partners to mark the occasion and learn more about how you can help continue his legacy of activism.

First, visit Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (801 Chase St, Annapolis) to view their new exhibit “The Art of Activism.”

Maryland Hall, in partnership with the Banneker Douglass Museum and Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, invited Maryland-based Black artists, whose work encapsulates activism and social justice and using the creative process to educate their audiences about diversity, equity and inclusion to send proposals to take one of six 5 ft. x 9 ft tall Black Lives Matter banners, which were hanging on the front steps of Maryland Hall, to use as a canvas for justice. Selected artists were asked to challenge viewers’ perception of art by using their individual banner as a platform to discuss social oppression and systemic patterns through visual or performance art.

See these banners on display now! The exhibit is open January 8 – February 27, 2021, but there’s no better opportunity than this weekend to visit, especially because Maryland Hall is offering special MLK Day gallery hours on Monday, January 18, 3:30-6:30 pm. Outdoor banners may be viewed anytime.

Then, on Monday, January 18, 12:00-12:30 pm, the Banneker-Douglass Museum hosts a Lunch & Learn: Preserving Protest Memorabilia. Take part in a lunchtime conversation on the importance of preserving the signage and other memorabilia created during the largest social justice movement of our time. Explore methods for preservation and learn some ideas for successfully archiving these pieces of history. This event will be held virtually through Zoom.

Enjoy your long weekend!
