Captain John Smith National Historic Water Trail

Imagine a world of deep, ancient forests, strong, proud people and water teeming with life. Such was the Chesapeake that Captain John Smith and his fellow travelers encountered on their journeys through this “goodly bay” and its rivers. Follow in the wake of Smith's journeys on the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, America's first national water trail. The historic routes cover approximately 3000 miles of the Bay and its tributaries, and they may be accessed from hundreds of points throughout Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Though the water trail is a work in progress, Captain John Smith's historic routes on the Chesapeake are known and can be followed in their entirety by those who have the time, the resources and the adventurous spirit to do so.
